AFSCME Member, Jim Soto, Loses His Battle with ALS

With great sorrow, we mourn the loss of our union brother, Jim Soto. You were so courageous in your battle -- your strength was an example for us all.

 Jim Soto, Sr. 1952 ~ 2007 Jim lost his battle to ALS, or Lou Gherig's disease Thursday, Sept. 13th. He was born in Bingham, UT to his mother Josie in 1952. He attended South High School and served briefly in the United States Marine Corp. He married his childhood sweetheart, Dora, in 1972. They had three children together, sons, Jim and Jason; and daughter, Julie Buchi. Jim was employed by the Salt Lake Water Dept for 30 years and retired last October due to his medical condition. Jim was an avid softball player. He competed locally and nationally for over 30 years in the sport. He was inducted into the Utah Softball Hall of Fame in 2006. He cherished the friends he made both on and off the field. Survived by wife, Dora; sons, Jimmy (Brooke) Soto; Jason (Kristen) Soto; daughter, Julie (Paul) Buchi; grandchildren, Lorenzo, Dante, and Jaxon; mother, Josie (Benjamin) Gabaldon; brothers, Joe, Ruben, Manuel Soto; Benny, Danny and Vince Gabaldon; sisters, Vickie Koether, Linda Peterson, Theresa Gonzales, and Becky Gabaldon. A visitation will be held Monday, September 17, 2007 at St. Ann's Church, 450 E. 2100 So., from 6-8 p.m. with a Rosary service at 7 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial, Tuesday, September 18th, 11 a.m. at Cathedral of the Madeleine, 331 E. South Temple, SLC. Burial to follow services, Mount Olivet Cemetery, 1342 E. 500 So. Arrangements made by Garner Funeral Home. Dear Dad, Thank you for being such a respectful and wonderful man! You were a fabulous husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, uncle and a true friend. Your vibrant smile, witty personality, love of playing softball and zest for life, is cherished by everyone you met and will live in each of us forever. Mom and the three amigos, Lorenzo, Dante and Jaxon, have something to say to their beloved Beep-Beep; Let's play ball! Love, All of Us.
